This series of images documents NHS staff in PPE worn during the COVID-19 pandemic. The rainbow signifies hope and solidarity but along with celebration there can be trauma and exhaustion. The colours, and challenges of the PPE, serve as a reminder of the unique experiences we’ve all had during this time.
As a medical photographer, working alongside these specialist teams, I felt it my duty to document the PPE used to keep patients and staff safe. I also had to adapt and wear the PPE documented here when working in clinical areas around the hospital. This gave me the insight and experience to know first-hand how it feels to work in the powered hoods, visors, face masks, aprons and gowns etc shown here.
The project recently won Bronze in the Institute of Medical Illustrators Awards 2021.
